NOVELIC’s ASPER is a 79GHz mmWave automotive radar sensor covering a field-of-view of 180 degrees with one module, enabling a cost-effective solution for a variety of short-range applications for passenger vehicles.

Its small size, wide field-of-view, and superior performance make it a capable replacement for ultrasonic parking sensors, while also performing some of the functions performed by corner radar sensors. With four sensors, all sides of the vehicle can be covered, allowing for 360° surround awareness.

Our radar platform enables automotive OEMs to improve their ADAS feature sets, while reducing the number of hardware components in the vehicle.

The Value configuration allows OEMs to bring corner radar-like functionality to entry-level cars, as well as cars for emerging markets – while replacing ultrasonic sensors with better-performing, but affordable, ASPER130 radar sensors.

The Performance configuration enhances mid-range cars with pre-existing corner radar sensors, by adding redundancy and removing ultrasonic parking sensors with better-performing ASPER230 radar sensors. The front module also fulfills ACPE functionality, exceeding the ISO/PAS 19486:2025 requirements. Kick-to-open, a function usually reserved for high-end cars, can now be implemented as a software feature in the rear radar sensor, if the car is equipped with a power liftgate.

The Premium configuration rounds out the robust ADAS feature sets of premium vehicles, with features such as automated park assist and ACPE. By introducing ASPER130 modules as side radar sensors, OEMs can enable features such as lateral collision warnings, cyclist dooring prevention, power door protection, and remove the legacy kick sensors and ultrasonic sensors, allowing for sleeker designs without holes in the bumper.

ASPER Automotive Radar Functions

Superior Park Assist

Our radar sensor covers a field view of 180 degrees with only one module, while providing better performance than sets of 4 or 6 ultrasonic parking sensors.

Radar sensors can detect obstacles at closer distances, as well as low-height objects (such as curbs), which ultrasonic sensors often struggle with.

Blind Spot Detection

The same hardware performs functions traditionally covered by corner radar sensors, such as blind spot detection – with accurate detection of vehicles in the driver’s blind spots, up to 25m for passenger vehicles and 10m for motorcycles.

Our sensors can detect stagnating vehicles, which legacy sensors can struggle with.

Kick-to-Open and more

The ASPER sensor can also fulfill ultra short-range applications, such as kick-to-open, removing the need for a dedicated capacitive kick sensor.

When used on the sides of the car, the same ASPER hardware can provide additional, software-defined functionality:

Lane Change Assist

The sensor can detect approaching vehicles in adjacent lanes, warning the driver who is planning to change lanes. The ASPER sensor is able to detect an incoming passenger vehicle in an adjacent lane up to 100 meters away.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Our 180° FoV module can be used for rear cross-traffic alerts (RCTA), providing better situational awareness while parking or backing out of a parking space. Its wide field of view allows for accurate detection of cars, bicycles and pedestrians in the driver’s blind spots at larger distances.

Front and Rear Collision Warning

The sensor detects passenger vehicles at distances of up to 100 meters, and motorcycles at distances of up to 50 meters. This enables front collision warning, and rear collision warning.

Surround awareness

If the passenger vehicle is equipped with a sensor on each side, the system can provide 360° surround awareness for the driver, with basic classification of vehicles around the driver.

Seamless integration

Radar sensors can be hidden inside plastic bumpers, allowing for sleeker designs without the holes needed to accomodate ultrasonic parking sensors. This also enables cheaper repairs in the case of an accident.

ASPER Automotive Radar Platform

A compact, cost-effective replacement for up to four ultrasonic parking sensors. Also applicable as a ultra-short range sensor for lateral collisions, power door protection, and kick-to-open.
